The hostilities that took place from 12 July
to 14 August 2006 between Israel and Hezbollah
had a devastating impact on the Lebanese
environment. The oil spill following the
attacks on the Jiyeh power plant has led to the
worst environmental crisis in Lebanon's history.
Fifteen years after the deliberate environmental
degradations committed by Saddam Hussein during the
1991 Gulf War, direct attacks on the environment
still remain part of military strategy. However,
there is now an increasing international
awareness that some military actions should be
considered environmental crimes. This book then
explores the existing legal mechanisms to hold
States and individuals accountable for
deliberate wartime environmental damage in the
light of the “Second Lebanon War”.
