The importance of the educational component in
promoting gender equality is strongly emphasized by
the theorists of gender mainstreaming.
Higher education in the Russian Far East is
developing in the same directions as the whole
country. The number of higher educational
institutions and students is increasing.
At the same time, the pace of development in higher
education in the Russian Far East lags noticeably
behind other regions of the country. Due to the
geography of the region, universities in the Russian
Far East have limited opportunities to recruit highly
skilled staff from other universities or experts and
researchers from other fields. It makes universities
rely exclusively on their internal resources for
updating their faculty and staff.
This work represents a quantitative comparative
analysis of students’ awareness of basic concepts of
gender equality and gender mainstreaming depending on
their gender and the type of community where they
originate from. The study also examines the
differences among three academic programs offered at
Far Eastern State Technical University (FESTU),
Vladivostok, with regard to promoting gender
equality.
