War rhetoric is used to gain public support; either from those who support the particular war effort, or from those who oppose it. The rhetor generally uses colorful or emotion-inspiring language in order to gain support for his or her position regarding war. This book reviews published reports of the use of war rhetoric in public speeches. Ernest Bormann’s Fantasy Theme Analysis was utilized to analyze the war rhetoric of former Presidents George H. Bush and George W. Bush as expressed in two critical speeches given by each President. The speeches analyzed were the one each offered upon entering into a war with Iraq during their respective administrations, and the State of the Union address each gave immediately after commencing war in the case of George W. Bush, and just prior to significant hostilities in the case of George H. Bush.
