In the new paradigm of cultural heritage recording, documenting and reconstructing visually complicated geometrical patterns remains extremely challenging. A major difficulty stems from the archaeological reality of the historic patterns which are deteriorated or visually unclear. In addition, existing recording technologies rely heavily on the subjective nature of our perceptual power in understanding its complexity and depicting subtle color differences. Moreover, a fundamental knowledge of pattern geometry and mathematical rules is required when performing these tasks. Challenged by these factors, this book presents one possible solution for automating these processes. This book uses an experimental approach to design, test and evaluate specialized software for identifying pattern geometry and restoring it, for the purpose of producing accurate reconstructed metric models. The conceptual framework proposed by this book serves as a platform for developing professional software related to fields of Photogrammetry and Pattern Recognition and should be especially useful to professionals in the fields of Archaeology, Historic Preservation, Architecture and Computer Vision.
