The amount of available audio data is increasing rapidly in consequence of advancements in media technologies. This rapid increase imposes new demands in audio data management and retrieval. However, modeling and retrieval techniques are not adequate, and handling audio data content is still far from sufficient for most retrieval tasks. In this book, we proposed an audio data model to fulfill user requirements in retrieving audio data from large collections. Also, the audio data repository model we proposed in this work allows us to capture the audio itself, its low-level representation, its meta-data information, and its timing information. Thus, it facilitates a multi-criteria query formulation and audio data retrieval where by audio can be queried both by its low- and high-level features. The proposed generic audio repository model can handle a general audio as well as a sub-repository model that can manipulate speech through its constituent units. The Object Relational scheme is used to manage these audio related data under a DBMS. The viability of the proposed model is demonstrated by a prototype system developed for an application in the medical domain.
