Gabriel Garcia Marquez grew up in an atmosphere that promoted a strong oral tradition - a tradition that has carried over into his novels. Chiasmus or inverted parallelism is a device that was favored by ancient oral traditionalists to enhance the listener's ability to recall long pasages, help organize thoughts, and provide symmetry. Chiastic organization consists of an a, b, c, d, e, e ', d ', c ', b', a ' scheme wherein mirrored elements correspond to each other. All of Marquez's novels through Of Love and Other Demons, to include the three biographies, The Story of a Shipwrecked Sailor, Clandestine in Chile, and The General in His Labyrinth are organized according to the principles of chiasmus. This book discusses the specific chiastic elements in every chapter of every novel.
