The Inherent Tensions in Beowulf This book is an exploration of the constant tension that exists within the heroic society of the Beowulf poem. In my book, I examine the poet's use of formulaic type-figures at different points of the narrative to portray this inherent tension. The poet successfully employs these figures to demonstrate the internal problems of a society that is caught in a continuous cycle of violence and loss. It is the poet’s knowledge and use of the tools of the oral tradition that enable him to produce a poem full of so many layers of meaning that capture so eloquently the constant sorrow and tragedy at the heart of heroic society.Indeed, it is perhaps when one realizes that even the most seemingly minor figures of the poem are part of the poet’s overall exploration of the inherent tensions of heroic society, that one can fully appreciate the subtle nuances of this truly remarkable poem.
