This book—the first of its kind— examines the representation of society in British and French cinemas of the 1980s, a particularly fascinating decade with the coming to power of the Conservative Party in Britain and the Socialist Party in France. As the two governments adopted extremely contrasting policies regarding their national cinemas, they increased the strengths and weaknesses traditionally found in their respective film industries. Both national cinemas dealt with similar social issues such as the questions of family, work and immigration, yet the images they offered were widely contrasted. Contrary to received opinion, representations were mildly ‘progressive’ in French cinema but favoured a return to traditional values in British cinema. British and French cinemas have frequently been examined separately or individually put in parallel with American cinema, but never with each other. The novelty of this book, therefore, is to highlight the different ways these two cinemas succeeded in projecting their national identities in a European context.
