It is a widely known fact that Henry David Thoreau’s
main works sprang of real autobiographical events;
they are fruits of deep, personal convictions.
Still, these exclusively private perceptions in
connection with the America of the 1850’s resound
with a stunning actuality today, in the 21st
century. In my work therefore I tried to highlight
those aspects of Thoreau’s creeds and world view,
which carry pertinent messages for the readers of
our days. His book’s reading as social criticism and
also as solution to the negative aspects he points
out constitutes the core of my thesis, and the
marrow of his most timely advices. Thoreau’s search
for a kind of absolute personal freedom closely
relates to the inspiring force of his “Civil
Disobedience,” indeed a most influential political
writing. My book, besides enriching the vast field
of Thoreau studies, is aiming at an exploration of
his ideas from a social point of view, it tries to
hold a mirror to them from the perspective of our
very days, and thus it speaks to every socially
aware reader.
