What Motivates Students to Perform Community Service?
This book studies volunteerism through philosophical
history, a review of contemporary research and a
cross-sectional study.
A chronicle of volunteerism in the United States
reviews the development of federal legislation,
national initiatives, and the relationship between
volunteerism and economics.
A review of literature on volunteerism includes
topics such as citizenship, impacts of gender, impact
on academics, and personal growth in young adults.
Historical and research reviews guided the
development of questions aimed at better
understanding volunteerism by high school students.
In order to answer these questions, a cross-sectional
study of students entering and leaving high school
investigated motivation for volunteerism, preference
of task, and the differences between genders.
Significant statistical differences emerged among
gender and age groups, giving educators an insight
into what motivates high school students to perform
community service.
