You need to read this book because it will help you
try to understand domestic abuse not only from a
theoretical position but will let you take part in
the discussions of Betty, Gail, Jean and Joanne as
they talk about what happened to them, to learn and
reflect on their actions. The groups' discussions,
and the reflective research diaries of the writer are
used to provide a story of how a group of women try
to rationalise irrationality and take action in their
community. In doing so they endeavour to improve the
response of professionals and help other women in the
same situation. The book uses narrative theory and
story telling as a method, to show how the process of
being involved in action research plays out and
evolves - each memory / action opens up new ways of
looking at domestic violence discourse - presenting a
kaleidoscope of experiences. This book tries to help
communicate these ideas to readers in the hope that
we can improve our professional and community
response to violence against women using community
education as a vehicle of change.
