Business and management is a popular study topic and is very attractive to both students and managers. During my study Business Administration at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, I read and learned a lot of books and articles on management. Most of these books contain theories and models that describe what to do (and what not to do) in order to effectively manage a company. Working part-time during my studies in a small fitness-centre, I experienced a very different kind of leadership than described in my study books. I cannot not recall any scientific model nor theory from my studies that could be directly applied to my place of employment. Despite of this, the company is very successful in its operations. This clear lack of scientific theory application at my job inspired me to conduct my bachelor's thesis research. This research investigates how it is possible for a small company not to apply any management theory in practice, but still be very successful in both a financial and non- financial way! This 'scientifically unorthodox' research is very interesting for both managers and scientists with an interest in leadership.
