Attitudes towards Grammar Instruction In an Academic
English Program. Edition No. 1
VDM Publishing House, April 2009, Pages: 88
Variables that may influence foreign language learning indirectly are: beliefs about foreign language learning and attitudes, which are determined by these beliefs as well as certain personality traits such as extroversion, introversion, tolerance of ambiguity, inhibition and risk-taking. The present study of attitudes towards grammar instruction was conducted in the department of the Intensive English Programs (IEP) at the American University of Armenia (AUA). It examines the reasons for the students’ expressed need for more grammar in the Intensive English Program (IEP). Questionnaires and interviews were used to collect data from the IEP faculty and the students. Both quantitative and qualitative research methods were used to analyze and interpret the data. The students’ attitudinal survey questionnaire revealed the reasons for their expressed need for wanting more grammar instructions. The instructors’ attitudinal survey questionnaire showed how the instructors address the grammar issue and how they interpret the students felt need for more grammar instruction.
