This book contributes to our understanding of
organizational communication in collaborative
interorganizational relationships (IORs) in the
nonprofit sector. Collaborative IORs demonstrate a
form of leadership that is distributed among the
partners to mediate between common and competing
interests. This enables collaborative IORs to foster
collective action, despite the absence
of formal authority structures. This book also
demonstrates the reciprocal processes of stakeholder
participation needed to sustain collective action in
collaborative IORs. Furthermore, the participation of
multiple stakeholders in collaborative IORs gives
rise to several communicative tensions that are
balanced through interactions among collaboration
members as they continually negotiate the social
infrastructure that constitutes collaborative IORs.
Overall, this research helps us better understand the
practices of communication and human interaction that
foster collaborative relationships among multiple
stakeholders, especially within organizational
partnerships in the nonprofit sector.
