Academic Effects of Writer's Workshop focuses on a
process approach to teaching writing in the
classroom. The investigation centers on the
effects of a particular process writing curriculum,
Writer’s Workshop, on the writing achievement of
fifth grade students as measured by an annual
standardized assessment tool. The research includes
three years of quantitative data with a total of over
300 subjects. Background information provides readers
with a history of the development of writing
instruction in schools, a comparison of traditional
and process writing instruction, and a description of
the major components and essential elements of
Writer's Workshop. Interviews and a lengthy
discussion of the findings suggest many positive
implications from the study as well as continued used
of the Writer's Workshop curriculum with
modifications.
