Amakudari – the ‘descent from heaven’ – can be seen as one of Japan’s modern mysteries. The reintake of already retired bureaucrats into high corporate positions within the private sector is a relic of the ‘old’ days developed out of the strong social bonds between Japan’s diverse society and it’s deeply rooted understanding of structure and governmental leadership. From creating a stable institutional form, Amakudari is constructing a widespread system of networks and co-operation among private sector corporations and diverse governmental levels. The process, its roots and characteristics are kept very mysterious. This book starts to look at the underlying social-cultural structure, focusing on the importance of Amakudari specifically as the 'Binding Glue' in the Japanese elite-power structure. Going further to see Amakudari as an institution, this book views Amakudari as the movement to the business sector whilst analysing existing Data to answer the questions of Amakudari as industry based and influencial in doing business in Japan. This book concludes by outlining the trends and outlooks in the continuance of Amakudari in Japan.
