Bridge deck bonded concrete overlays including latex- modified concrete (LMC) and microsilica concrete (MSC) are being employed as corrosion protection strategy. The overlay also provides an aesthetic product and good riding quality. This book addresses the performance-based aspects and structural benefits of bridge deck concrete overlays with and without fibers. The findings of extensive laboratory investigations and field application on a full scale prototype bridge system are discussed. Target performance criteria are proposed. Comparisons between the properties of the fibrous and plain mixtures are made. The bond strength and composite action between the bridge deck and overlay are experimentally evaluated. A new system for casting LMC with synthetic fibers using mobile mixers is tried and proved its effectiveness. A simplified strength-based shrinkage prediction model is developed based on the shrinkage data and other data from literature. Finite element simulations are also performed to support the experimental test results and to clarify critical issues related to the composite action between the bridge deck and the overlay.
