English as a second language is a compulsory subject in many countries, and more and more teachers are engaging in MA TESOL programmes. It is difficult for universities in western countries to have a full understanding of the academic environments in other countries, especially East Asian countries, and how English is taught in them. This can lead to differences between programme designers’ ideas and learners’ expectations and needs. Much research in this field has focused on how to improve teaching methods and many papers have been updated or newly written since the introduction of MA TESOL programmes. However, very few of these cover programme evaluation research in depth or give insights into the feelings of the students, especially foreign students. In an attempt to help remedy this situation, this dissertation investigates through literature and empirical research the expectations of the MA TESOL students at the University of Bath and aims to identify how and to what extent their needs and expectations have been met. The analysis should be helpful for institutions conducting MA TESOL or similar programmes, professionals and student.
