Juveniles mandated by the courts to attend high
school as a condition of probation or parole is a
prevalent issue in today’s juvenile justice system.
This study addresses a major gap in the literature
regarding appropriate pedagogy utilized in post-
incarceration academic programming/intervention.
Further, this study provides a compelling
examination of the psychological stress factors
predominant in the lives of many of these youth,
particularly how these factors affect achievement
outcomes in high school. 'One Last Chance High' adds
critical research information about an underserved
and often overlooked population. Hopefully, this
work will inspire educators to meet our students
where they are in terms of providing learning
opportunities for all. Research is integral to our
ability to provide service to students. 'One Last
Chance High' gives voice to this unique population.
With any luck, this study will serve as a seminal
investigation, opening the portal to a lifetime of
teaching and learning, as a means of protecting and
ultimately supporting the successful education and
transition of disenfranchised youth.
