This study examines the meaning of entering drug
treatment, barriers to treatment, and the factors
reported as influencing decisions to enter or avoid
treatment by a sample of 20 African-American
injection drug users (IDUs). Research indicates
that IDUs who do not enter treatment pose serious
public health risks by potentially spreading HIV and
Hepatitis C through sharing drug injection equipment.
