This book discusses one of the most powerful tools of
Soviet propaganda – “political” caricatures, which
were published in the official Soviet newspaper
Pravda. The main focus of the work is the
stereotypical image of Israel in Soviet caricature as
well as the most important methods of visualizing the
enemy and significant changes in the depiction of the
“Zionist state” during the 40-years period of
Soviet-Israeli political confrontation. The book also
aims to describe the main themes of anti-Israeli
caricatures and to answer the question whether or not
antisemitic motifs were used in those drawings. In
addition to the analysis of caricatures the author
offers a survey of the approaches to the phenomenon
of political cartoon in general and in the USSR
particularly and gives a brief review of the history
of Soviet-Israeli relationship. The present research
may be useful for those who study or is interested in
contemporary anti-Israelism, Soviet journalism and
visual arts.
