The book examines some phonological processes in Akan within the framework of autosegmental phonology. It traces autosegmental phonology from the classical generative phonological theory through non-linear phonology. It becomes evident that the idea of phonological features spreading to portions of the syllable, whole syllable, feet, words, etc. is not new. Much work in the Firthian school (Palmer 1970) started from this very assumption. It shows that the phonological processes in Akan are better analysed using multidimensional approach of phonological theory which isolates the features of segments that can function independently in phonological processes. The discussions in this book show that even though autosegmental phonology began with tone (tonology of lgbo) it can be extended to other phonological phenomena. Phonologists and students of phonology will find this book a useful tool in their studies and research work.
