Waste Not Want Not. Edition No. 1
VDM Publishing House, Dec 2008, Pages: 44
This thesis explores the relationship between the Cold War and waste in Don DeLillo's Underworld. The introduction gives an overview of general waste and waste in Underworld, setting up the context and perimeters of both the Cold War and waste. It then posits the question of how waste and the Cold War are related and essentially the same. In order to examine the practical, emotional and psychological repercussions of the Cold War, waste is explored in the areas of consumerism, love, art and nostalgia. While consumerism deals with the practical aspect of waste and the Cold War, it is crucial that the emotional and psychological effects are examined too. Not all waste is tangible and the third chapter “Love” explores the intangible waste that surfaces in Underworld. While consumerism and love figure into the middle two chapters, art and nostalgia are addressed in the conclusion as a means of tying up all the loose ends and positing that perhaps the Cold War is essentially a kind of waste.
