'ecosan' describes a whole range of technologies and institutional arrangements, which address both the issues of water scarcity and better sanitation. It covers closed-loop systems of wastewater management, concentrating on the principles of recycling water and extraction of nutrients. It emphasis that properly sanitised human excreta and urine can be used as an effective fertiliser and soil conditioner. Collecting the nutrients found in urine and faeces through ecosan technologies and returning them to the agricultural use is helpful on increasing production, and ultimately enhance food security situation.
