At Independence in 1964, poverty was one of the major vices the new Kenyan political leadership promised to fight with resolve. The new leaders blamed colonialism for the vice. 46 years down the line, majority of Kenyans are poor despite government policies aimed at fighting poverty and the involvement of many NGOs. Where is the problem? The author looks at poor political leadership with its poor planning, policies without the poor in mind,corruption, lack of political good will and lack of empowerment of the poor among others as the major drawbacks to poverty alleviation. Kibera, the largest slum in Africa alongside others all over the country remain a sign of shame to the Nation and its leadership. The sight of boys and girls scavenging for food in the cities and towns is a sign of a government which cares little about its citizens. The poor are used as bridges to political position and power through promises which are never fulfilled. In this book, the author offers workable suggestions which if put in place would set free majority of the Kenyan population from the chains of poverty and the shame it brings to the nation.
