This qualitative study examines the process of acculturation, mate selection and identity development among Asian Indians and first generation Asian Indian immigrants. The study interviewed 90 parents and 90 young adults in New Delhi, India and 72 parents and 55 young adults in New York and New Jersey, USA. Data on ethnic identification was collected using a modified version of the Suin-Lew Asian self identity scale. The study indicates that young adults in the United States have largely adopted bicultural identities while young adults in India dominantly identified with their Indian heritage. Similar results were found for the parents in both the cultural contexts. Interestingly, Asian Indians residing in India indicated a shift in their ethnic identification towards a more bicultural identity. Young adults in both cultures indicated a growing preference for the western model of self selection in marriage and in establishing long term relationships. Parents of young adults however are more reluctant to give up traditional Hindu values, attitudes, and practices related to mate selection and marriage. Issues affecting family life of Indian
