Flood Risk Perceptions and Hazard Management. Edition No. 1
VDM Publishing House, Dec 2010, Pages: 64
This study examined flood risk perception of the residents and experts/ mangers and the implications for flood hazard management in Libokemkem district of South Gondar Zone. The study found that nearly 50% (i.e.21,000 people) of the total population (i.e. 46,089 people) living in flood-prone kebeles were highly vulnerable to flood risk, and about 3,900 hectares of arable land as well as 1,200 hectares of gazing field are exposed to flooding. The survey on flood risk perceptions depicted a wide range of understandings of flood hazard causes within the participants. These perceptions have significant effects on household decision making in the face of uncertainties, such as taking precautionary actions, employing viable coping mechanisms and adapting feasible livelihood strategies in order to live with flood hazard. Therefore, an effective policy strategy development for flood hazard management should accept and integrate the residents and key stake holders' understandings of the nature of the hazard, perceptions of risks and levels of trust upon disaster management organizations to improve safety and minimize the negative impacts of the hazard on the vulnerable communities.
