Trends and Opportunities in the European Market for Automotive NVH
Frost & Sullivan, April 2011, Pages: 160
This Frost & Sullivan research service titled Trends and Opportunities in the European Market for Automotive NVH Materials provides details about acoustic insulation and acoustic absorption. In this research, Frost & Sullivan's expert analysts thoroughly examine the following noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) acoustic insulation applications: cockpit module, floor module, cargo management systems module and roofing systems. The acoustic absorption modules are bonnet liners, engine casing and wheel arches.
Higher Demand for Comfort among Automobile Owners in Europe Puts the €646.7-million Automotive NVH Market on the Fast Lane to Success Car owners in Europe often base their purchase decisions on the comfort and luxury offered by the cars, giving NVH material manufacturers many reasons to feel optimistic about their market prospects. High-quality, premium NVH materials will provide exceptional acoustic/vibration insulation and absorption. As powerful engines will require advanced materials to absorb the noise and vibration from the automotive unit at the source itself, NVH material manufacturers will be aiming to develop innovative and superior materials. An increase in the production of cars, especially in the mid segment, and OEMs’ need to comply with the EU noise emission directive 2000/14/EC will also give a leg up to the NVH market. “Many tough materials with outstanding acoustic properties are being used in the interiors,” says the analyst of this research. “They not only impart a smooth finish on the surface, but also increase the vehicle safety, making a robust case for advanced NVH materials among vehicle manufacturers.”
Currently, polyurethane (PU) is the NVH material of choice across all automotive applications due to its excellent acoustic properties and light weight. With the perceptible shift towards more eco-friendly cars, participants have gradually begun to use natural products such as felt fibres, sugarcane fibres and soya fibres to create bio-based PU. However, this green trend has also triggered the use of recycled NVH materials, which is posing a great threat to the adoption of virgin NVH materials. Similarly, the rise in the prices of raw materials such as crude oil and the automobile industry’s drive to reduce the weight of the vehicle have had considerable bearing on the NVH materials market. “It is expected that by 2017, the weight of NVH materials will be reduced by about 5 to 10 per cent in an automotive module, in the form of material substitution,” notes the analyst. “Although OEMs are selecting materials that can best satisfy both performance and price criteria, end users are likely to tilt towards low-priced products.”
International NVH manufacturers in Europe will have to focus on high-end products for multinational end-user companies in the same region to garner a significant share of the market. They are also acquiring the regional leaders to strengthen their market position; further market consolidation can be expected due to the density of regional manufacturers.
