Market Outlook for Non-Utility Solar PV Installations in Key States in North America

Summary

Solar rooftop PV installations are growing rapidly and are driven by a combination of declining prices of PV cells, modules and several policy-based incentives. The future growth, and size of the rooftop market is highly dependent on continued PV cost reductions, financing options, net metering policies, and future incentives. The market penetration of commercial and residential PV installations in the US is very high and they represent the largest segment of the US, the largest market in North America. The US PV market has been primarily driven by the non-utility segments since 2008 which comprised over 70% of the total installations. To meet growing demand the US–based PV industry is planning to expand their manufacturing capacity. Utility-scale PV installations are relatively low when compared to non-residential (includes commercial, public sector, and nonprofit) and residential installations in Q1, 2011. This scenario is likely to change as a significant pipeline capacity for utility-scale projects is now available in the market. Non-utility Solar PV installations have been experiencing 100% growth year-onyear. Reduced prices, lease or power purchase agreement (PPA) structure and rebate offerings contributed to the increased installation and would continue to contribute to a major share of the total solar PV installation in North America.
