Manufacturing Companies’ Focus on Improving the Product Development Process Raises Demand for PLM
The automotive, heavy engineering, and industrial machinery sectors account for the major share of PLM sales in India, with the automotive and industrial machinery sectors being the fastest adopters. The majority of tier I original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) utilize PLM in their product management initiatives and on occasion, PLM has also been implemented by a few tier II OEMs and component suppliers to aid their module and assembly development operations. However, complete PLM implementations with all the three components of computer-aided design/computer-aided-engineering (CAD/CAE), lifecycle management, and digital manufacturing have been few, and mostly concentrated among large enterprises. “Medium-sized enterprises are gradually shifting from traditional CAD components to include lifecycle data management capabilities,” says the analyst of this research. “Small-sized businesses, being largely CAD-centric and OEM-driven, are yet to completely appreciate the benefits of PLM.” Infrastructure growth, high-volume production of capital goods for the power sector, increasing private sector participation in the aerospace and defense sector and the growth of the public sector defense organizations have all contributed significantly to the PLM market in 2010.
Manufacturing companies’ desire to streamline their product development process by utilizing a single enterprise-wide platform for product design is expected to go a long way in stoking demand for PLM. Further, companies are increasingly involving their non-engineering departments such as marketing and finance into the product development process to make their products more cost-efficient. They are becoming aware of PLM’s ability to give them a competitive edge by enabling a faster time-to-market. “As organizations grow, they realize the need to vault design data, manage product configurations and portfolios effectively, and be able to track design changes through PLM,” notes the analyst. “The necessity to standardize design platforms and processes is giving a boost to market sales.” OEMs, to reduce the overall product development time, are increasingly involving component suppliers in the product development phase, as the latter can dynamically influence product design and respond to the OEM’s needs faster.
