According to official data, in 2010 12.55 billion cigarettes were sold in Belgium. However, this figure refers to the number of tax stamps sold in the country rather than to the number of cigarettes sold in the marketplace. The real figures were lower, however, as, knowing that fiscal label prices were to soar in 2011, manufacturers are known to have bought tax stamps in advance in order to lower the impact of new legislation on cigarette sales.
