Basel II: Australia And Singapore Lead Asia-Pacific In Preparations Feb 05

Abstract The diverse banking systems in the Asia-Pacific region are progressing gradually toward the implementation of Basel II, although progress varies from country to country. Banking systems best progressed in adopting Basel II ('Basel Committee on Banking Supervision's International Convergence of Capital Measurement and Capital Standards-A Revised Framework', issued in June 2004) are Australia and Singapore, although both these systems still must contend with significant challenges in meeting implementation timetables. Good progress appears to be occurring in some other markets, including Hong Kong and Japan. Some countries, including Korea, China, Thailand, and Malaysia, are opting for a more gradual and phased implementation of Basel II.
