Abstract Underpinned by relatively low economic and industry risk by international standards, the Australian banking system is one of the soundest of the 70 banking systems assessed by Standard & Poor's. The banking industry's operating performance has benefited from a reasonably robust economy, which has been among the best performing of Western developed economies over the past five to eight years. Although the Australian economy lacks depth and diversity compared with the economies of some of its international peers, it has been significantly reformed and restructured over the past 20 years, and has contended satisfactorily with a number of stress tests, including the Asian crisis of 1996-1998 and the spill-over effects of the recent U.S. economic downturn.
