Improved Loan-Sentiment Trends Might Still Reverse For U.S. Banks Aug 11

Abstract The July 2011 U.S. Senior Loan Officer Survey released by the Federal Reserve on Aug. 15, 2011, depicts gradual easing in lending conditions, continuing the trend set in the prior few quarters. Bank loan officers from 55 domestic banks and 22 U.S. branches and agencies of foreign banks indicated that lending standards and terms generally eased during second-quarter 2011 for most loans not secured by real estate. The survey was taken in mid-July, before market conditions turned volatile and the Fed reported that the economy was showing slower growth. Therefore, the November survey might depict a reversal of some recently reported trends, in Standard & Poor's Ratings Services' view.
