Abstract By international standards, Australia's financial system is a well-developed, deregulated system, which is highly competitive and contains a broad range of institution types. The credit profile of Australian banks has remained largely stable, with sound profitability and capitalization. Asset quality within the sector is very sound and is supported by a robust domestic economy. Australia is considered to posses one of the lowest levels of banking industry risk. In the worst case scenario, Standard & Poor's estimates that the potential level of gross problematic assets in the financial system, expressed as a percentage of domestic credit to the private sector and nonfinancial public enterprises, would be in the range of 5%-15%.
