Abstract
The Australian banking sector is among the least risky of the 70 banking systems assessed by Standard & Poor's. The sector is underpinned by a relatively small but robust economy, which has been significantly reformed and restructured over the past decade, and industry risk is mitigated by prudent banking regulation and transparent and well-developed accounting standards and reporting practices. Dominated by four private-sector banking groups that control approximately 70% of banking assets, the Australia banking industry is stable from a structural standpoint. Credit quality is sound by international standards, with all four major banks rated in the 'AA' category. A further six regional banks are of investment grade credit quality.
