Global Enterprise VoWLAN Single-mode and DECT Phone Market
Frost & Sullivan, Sep 2011, Pages: 153
Improved Voice Quality and Security Aid Technology Adoption in the Global Enterprise VoWLAN Single-mode and DECT Phone Market
Wi-Fi’s Long-term Roadmap Spikes Demand for VoWLAN
Enterprise VoWLAN and DECT devices are changing the way employees communicate and collaborate. Compelling case studies that highlight increased worker productivity and reduced operational expenditure (OPEX) are enabling strong traction for both these technologies. In 2010, the overall worldwide shipment of enterprise VoWLAN single-mode and DECT phone units reached nearly 422,784 and 1.49 million respectively, translating to a year-over-year growth of 24.5 and 25.5 percent. Growth in VoWLAN will outpace that of DECT due to the unprecedented success of wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi) within the North American enterprise space. “The growing deployment of WLAN infrastructure within enterprise spaces is enhancing the prospects for VoWLAN devices,” notes the analyst of this research service. “Companies looking to leverage their existing infrastructure find VoWLAN handsets the most appropriate solution.” While the enterprise DECT phone market is also positively affected by the mobility trend, what is truly driving this market is the maturity of the technology. Within the European enterprise space, companies have been using DECT technology for over a decade and have come to appreciate its excellent audio quality and range. Uniquely, its audio quality does not deteriorate with interference from other technologies, as it works over a regulated frequency.
Although enterprise-grade mobility endpoints offer compelling benefits to companies and their employees, vendors are confronted with several challenges that restrain the demand for VoWLAN and DECT devices. With regards to VoWLAN single-mode handsets, these devices are still perceived to be prohibitively expensive. VoWLAN device companies find it difficult to justify the ROI of maintaining two separate infrastructures - one for data and another for voice. Furthermore, interoperability issues between platforms, applications, and end-points, continue to pose a challenge for vendors. On the other hand, DECT phones are generally less expensive, but they only handle simple data (text messages) as they do not have the same capacity as VoWLAN.
VoWLAN and DECT vendors must invest time and resources in educating their distribution channels and customers on the benefits of these solutions, if they are to maximize the sales opportunity. Furthermore, vendors must develop tailor-made solutions that best meet the needs of the different verticals to present a more persuasive ROI. “Vendors must attune their devices to communicate with other platforms, applications, and endpoints to unify and broaden the communications experience,” says the analyst. “The interoperability between the aforementioned elements is a key component of the growing unified communications (UC) trend.” The future success of many vendors will depend on their ability to respond to the changing times.
