This new report provides analysis of the automotive lighting sector, including its key drivers, regulatory environment. It also provides a detailed look at the latest lighting technologies

Background to this Research

The last few years have seen something of a revolution occurring in automotive lighting facilitated by a range of new light technologies. The lighting industry as a whole is moving rapidly from the incandescent and gas discharge based technologies that dominated the 20th century to solid state technology in the form of Light Emitting Diodes (LED), which are a point source light; Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLED), which are an area source and the increasing use of lasers.

The benefits of moving to solid state light sources is clear as today something like all of the electrical energy generated is used for lighting, and this is on target for a 50% reduction by 2025 largely lead by the automotive sector. Furthermore, solid-state sources reduce the overall CO2 emissions by using less energy and have a significantly longer lifetime.

The revolution in optics and photonics has begun to offer OEMs an evolving ‘toolkit' of options to improve safety, lower long-term costs, improve efficiency and add some unique design elements to vehicles.

Lighting has therefore been the focus of intense development in recent years, particularly amongst the European OEMs. The advent of LED technology that can be applied both to front and rear applications has allowed further development of adaptive lighting systems at the same time as facilitating a freedom of design that has rarely been available. Indeed, a number of OEMs are looking to the headlamp design particularly to add considerably to the visual DNA of the model and brand.
