Spain - Broadband Market Insights, Statistics and Forecasts
Paul Budde Communication Pty Ltd, Jan 2012, Pages: 25
Spain’s broadband penetration is on a par with the EU average, though subscribers have continued to contend with relatively high access prices and slow average data speeds. Nevertheless, the incumbent Movistar (formerly Telefónica) has launched 30Mb/s services, while some cablecos provide 100Mb/s. Prompted by the EC, the regulator in 2009 reversed its decision to protect Movistar’s fibre network from competitor access, originally intended to safeguard the company’s investments. Access through local loop unbundling is gaining pace, encouraging competition and lower prices in most regions. In this report we profile Spain’s fixed and wireless broadband markets, together with developments in related technologies such as fibre, and broadband powerline. We also provide forecasts for broadband uptake from 2011-2013 and 2020.
Key developments: Las Palmas completes initial stage of muni WiFi network; consortium develops FttH network in Extremadura; FttH lines breach 100,000; regulator’s 2010 market data and updates for Q3 2011 and to November 2011; operator data to Q3 2011.
Companies covered in this report include: Movistar, Orange, ONO, Jazztel.
