Spain - Digital Economy and Digital TV - Insights, Statistics and Analysis

Description:
Spain’s market for bundled services has grown alongside considerable investment in faster IP networks, largely based on ADSL2+ but including VDSL and an increasing number of fibre launches in the major cities. Cable operators are currently at the forefront of the convergence markets, having launched 100Mb/s services to provide multiple-channel IPTV as well as VoD, but other operators, based on wholesale access to Telefónica’s fibre network, will gain market share in coming years as fibre networks are extended to most of the country. Satellite TV has seen considerable changes in recent years following the merger of Telefónica’s Via Digital with Canal Satélite Digital. The switch to digital terrestrial TV, re-launched in late 2005, was completed in April 2010. This report provides an overview of developments in bundled and VoIP services, and also analyses the digital and satellite TV markets.

Key developments: Carlyle Group buys Telecable Asturias; Digital+ rebrands as Canal+; Abertis Telecom sells half if its stake in Eutelsat; Jazztel launches Jazzbox OTT platform; regulator proposes reduction in number of DTT channels for 2015; regulator’s 2011 market data and updates to April 2012; telcos’ operating and financial data to Q1 2012; market developments to mid-2012.
