Abstract NEW YORK (Standard & Poor's) April 8, 2010--Press reports have announced that United Air Lines Inc. (the major operating subsidiary of UAL Corp., both rated 'B-' with a negative outlook) and US Airways Inc. (B-/Negative/--) are again discussing a potential merger. This would mark the third time both airlines have held these discussions, first in 2001 and most recently, in 2008. UAL also explored a merger with Continental Airlines Inc. in 2008, but more recently UAL and Continental have entered into a joint marketing alliance. While neither UAL nor US Airways has yet to comment on any potential merger, managements of both companies have been vocal proponents of industry consolidation for some time.
