Abstract NEW YORK (Standard & Poor's CreditWire) March 12, 2001-- President Bush's appointment of a Presidential Emergency Board to avert a potential strike by Northwest Airlines Inc. mechanics and his implicit warning that he would do the same in other large airline labor confrontations this year eases the near-term threat of costly strikes and may help the affected companies slow spiraling wage and benefit costs. Still, the Administration's move will not change the overall industry trend of rising labor costs, may not prevent nonstrike disruption by airline employees, and could accelerate federal intervention in airline industry affairs more generally.
