An improving economy, seasonal demand, and newer entrants into the airline industry are factors leading to an increase in travel and seat capacity at many U.S. airports, which, in turn, contribute to their overall financial performance and credit quality. However, the fragile financial condition of most of the large legacy carriers with expansive route networks and the rising prominence and market share of low-cost carriers offering more point-to-point service have drawn attention to the role and future of U.S. connecting hubs.
