Abstract
Following a slowdown in the growth of Japan's mobile phone market due to near saturation in 2008 and 2009, rising demand for smartphones has recharged subscriber numbers along with the earnings of a number of the nation's key industries. The popularity of smartphones in overseas markets has also led to a steep increase in the production of smartphone handsets. Consequences for related domestic industries are both positive and negative. While growing demand for smartphones has produced broad benefits in some industries, Standard & Poor's Ratings Services believes fewer companies in these industries will see gains from smartphone penetration in the future.
