Bluetooth continued to gain design wins over a wide range of applications, with Bluetooth device shipments increasing by 23% between 2009 and 2010. This growth has been due to the continued success of Classic Bluetooth, which includes all Bluetooth 1.x and 2.x standards. Bluetooth has been bolstered in the past year by the emergence of two new standards. Bluetooth 3.0 + High Speed (HS) combines classic Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to transmit large data files. It was introduced in mobile phones in 2010. Bluetooth 4.0 offers much lower power consumption than Classic Bluetooth and is targeted at medical and fitness devices, as well as PCs and mobile phones. Bluetooth 4.0 can also accommodate the HS option found in Bluetooth 3.0. The first 4.0 devices will ship in late 2011.

This PowerPoint report contains five-year forecasts through 2015 for the penetration of Bluetooth by Bluetooth type, including classic Bluetooth, Bluetooth 3.0 + HS, Bluetooth 4.0 and Bluetooth 4.0 + HS, into 21 separate applications within the PC, PC peripheral, communications, CE, automotive, medical, and industrial segments. The report contains responses about Bluetooth knowledge and device usage from a large domestic In-Stat online survey.

Methodology

- In-Stat’s online survey was completed in May 2011 with 1,000 respondents
- Used large, third-party online consumer panel consisting of over 2.5 million US consumers
- Panel members were recruited by invitation
- Panel delivers cross-section of US population with normalized demographic and geographic balance
- Asked two questions about Bluetooth
