Great Potential for Russian B2C E-Commerce Industry
The “Russia B2C E-Commerce Report 2011” provides comprehensive data on trends, revenue figures, market shares and competitors regarding B2C E-Commerce as well as internet users and online shoppers in Russia.
In 2010, only approximately 25 % of the Russian population had access to a broadband connection and only 8 million Russians had a fixed-line connection. Nonetheless, almost 40 % of the population used the internet. The number of online shoppers increased in 2010 to as many as 45 million.
Key regions: Moscow and St. Petersburg
The retail structure is still underdeveloped in Russia, which is why E-Commerce has high development potential there. Less than 1 % of all retail revenue is generated in the B2C E-Commerce segment. According to the “Russia B2C E-Commerce Report 2011” “books”, “household appliances” and “CDs/DVDs” ranked amongst the most popular categories for online shoppers. Moscow and St. Petersburg are the key B2C E-Commerce regions, where more than half of Russia’s online revenue was generated in 2010.
Private shopping sites as an important trend
The growing importance of social networks is particularly apparent in Russia. The average time spent online on such sites per visitor reached an international record in August 2010 with nearly 10 hours. Additionally, so-called private shopping sites mark one of the main trends in Russian B2C E-Commerce. KupiVIP is successfully represented in this category with the distribution of designer fashion. Other important competitors in Russian B2C E-Commerce are online supermarket Utkonos, generalist Ozon and consumer electronics online outlets Holodilnik, Pleer and MVideo.
