Increasing Domestic Gas Consumption is Prompting China to Develop its Shale Gas Resources
Summary
People’s Republic of China (China) is currently pursuing its goal to achieve a share of natural gas in its primary energy mix to 10% by 2020. In 2001, the share of natural gas in the country’s energy mix was about 2.3%. Consequently, the country is witnessing rapid growth in natural gas consumption. In order to meet growing gas consumption, the country has made investments to increase domestic gas production as well as to develop infrastructure for gas imports. However, the country has realized that its proven reserves of conventional gas will not last for long, at current production levels. Also, imports of natural gas are increasing at a rapid pace. As a result, China’s government has decided to take concrete steps towards developing its resources of unconventional gas.
