Thailand Tourism Report Q4 2011
Business Monitor International, Sep 2011, Pages: 63
BMI's Thailand Tourism Report provides industry professionals and strategists, corporate analysts, tourism associations, government departments and regulatory bodies with independent forecasts and competitive intelligence on Thailands's tourism industry.
Growth Continues In H111
Tourist arrivals continued to pick up in the second quarter of the year, building on strong growth in the first quarter. Tourist arrivals totalled 4.35mn in the second quarter, an increase of an impressive 50% year-on-year (y-o-y). Growth in this quarter was so strong because it represented a statistical rebound from Q210, when political turmoil in Thailand virtually shut down the tourist industry between April and May. Yet even with this statistical effect, 4.35mn is the largest Q2 growth since 2006, indicating that the country's tourist industry has returned to a growth path.
The formation of a new government in Thailand should also provide support for the tourist industry, with the election of new Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra boding well for a return to political stability. That said, the weakening economic environment, particularly in the US, may weigh on the industry, despite improving domestic fundamentals. BMI is currently maintaining its forecast for 15.9mn arrivals in 2011 but will reassess this if economic challenges continue to mount in Thailand's main source markets.
Orient Thai Makes Recovery Plans
Orient Thai, formerly one of the major competitors for national carrier Thai Airways, is planning a recovery strategy to allow it to regain some of the ground it has lost during the increasing competition in the airline sector. The airline plans to buy 12 Boeing aircraft by the end of 2012 to replace its ageing McDonnell Douglas aircraft. The airline has suffered in recent years, with the underperformance of its low-cost subsidiary One-To-Go meaning that the latter had to be folded back into the Orient Thai brand. In addition, the crash of a One-To-Go aircraft in 2007, following by its suspension in July 2008 over safety concerns, severely undermined the brand. Orient Thai will now be hoping to rebrand itself, although it faces fierce competition from a revived Thai Airways.
Focus On Trat
Thailand's most eastern province, Trat, has traditionally been a focus for local and regional tourism, but is becoming increasingly popular with international tourists. The province is located on the border with Cambodia, making it a popular destination for Cambodians and also a stopping-off point for tours from the two countries. It also boasts a number of relatively unspoilt beaches, with the most famous of these being Ko Chang island. The city of Trat, the capital of the province, is the main jumping-off point for exploring the rest of the province. The province is known for its as a result of the large ruby mines in the area, and tourists frequently travel from other provinces to visit the gem markets.
