The Survey of Small and Medium Sized College Staffing Plans looks at the employment practices and plans of American colleges with less than 10,000 full-time equivalent students. The report gives detailed data on hiring trends in the past three years and projected forward for the next three for many categories of college employees including adjunct and full-time faculty and administrative staff. The report emphasizes administrative staff.
The 100+ page report gives data on the percentage of staff and faculty expected to retire within the next five years, on expected growth rates of student enrollment, student-faculty and student-administrator ratios, and recent and projected employment plans for personnel in continuing education, the academic library, information technology, student financial aid, buildings facilities and grounds, marketing and enrollment, registrars office, office of the college president, admissions office, public relations, institutional advancement and public affairs, finance and treasury, payroll and accounts payable, legal staff, graduate studies, student residence/housing, student entertainment, health services, campus security & police, academic advising, career services, human resources, and other areas. The report also gives detailed data on spending on human resources departments and expectations over future enrollment and the impact of distance education.
Just a few of the report's many findings are that:
- In 2010 the colleges in the sample had 5 administrative employees per 100 students enrolled.
- The mean age full time faculty for the colleges in the sample was 46.15 years.
- The colleges in the sample expect that 10.00% of their current full time faculty will retire within the next five years.
- In academic advising more than 54% have not increased or decreased employment levels in the past three years while 9.1% have decreased it and more than 36% increased it.
- All colleges in the sample with more than 5,000 students have increased academic advising staffs within the past three years.
- In Admissions 60% of colleges surveyed will increase employment over the next three years and 40% will hold it constant; none will decrease personnel in this area.
