However, in the second half of 2006 the US economy started decelerating below the long-term growth trend. The economic slump continued in 2007, mainly due to the slowdown in the housing market and the subprime crisis. The economy registered growth of 2% during 2007 and 0% during 2008, with real GDP contracting by 2.6% in 2009. The US returned to growth in the third quarter of 2009, as the economy expanded by 3.5%; this was followed by growth of 2.8% in 2010. Datamonitor forecasts indicate that the growth rate is expected to drop to 2.2% in 2011.'
